The automotive sector is the backbone of the German economy, regardless of current turbulences. The knowledge that genuine spare parts from Germany stand for longevity, quality and safety makes these products so sought-after worldwide. For this reason, Germans in particular, but also other original manufacturers, suffer from the increase in counterfeits and plagiarism. The involvement of customers and workshops to identify counterfeit products as well as the provision of mobile services related to the individual part is an important item on the digital agenda of manufacturers.

Manufacturers against Product Piracy
Automotive suppliers support initiative against product piracy
Counterfeit spare parts cause substantial damage to the automotive sector and the economy every year. The European umbrella organisation of automotive suppliers, CLEPA, estimates that counterfeit car parts in the supplier industry amount to between five and ten billion euros every year. But not only monetary losses are the problem here. Even though counterfeit products cause losses in sales for the automotive suppliers, drivers are massively at risk because of unsafe products.
The industry initiative „Manufacturers against Product Piracy“ (MAPP) was founded by members of the European umbrella organisation of automotive suppliers (CLEPA) to combat product piracy and exchange knowledge about product and brand protection. The goal of the initiative is to raise the market participants’ awareness for the topic and educate on how genuine parts can be identified.
As a measure to quicker distinguish between counterfeit and real products in future, multiple members of the initiative “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) are labelling their genuine products with a DataMatrix code based on a encoding recommendation by CLEPA or with a serialized QR code. This unique MAPP code can easily be checked with oneIDentity+, the first IT based standard solution for the automotive aftermarket. Within seconds the user knows if the part in question is genuine.

Partner & Network
CLEPA (European Association of Automotive Supplier) represents more than 3,000 companies of European automotive suppliers, who employ 5,000,000 employees. These companies invest over 20 billion euros in research and development every year to offer their customers solutions for safe, intelligent and sustainable mobility. Analogous to VDMA, product and brand piracy is an important topic for CLEPA as well, with numerous events and campaigns taking place. This way, CLEPA, as co-initiator of the MAPP initiative, has been supporting oneIDentity+ in the fight against product piracy and high counterfeit protection for many years. Events such as the CLEPA Anti Counterfeit Day send a clear signal against product piracy and promote a sector-wide cross-company strategy to combat the aforementioned.
