Automotive suppliers support initiative against product piracy
Counterfeit spare parts cause substantial damage to the automotive sector and the economy every year. The European umbrella organisation of automotive suppliers, CLEPA, estimates that counterfeit car parts in the supplier industry amount to between five and ten billion euros every year. But not only monetary losses are the problem here. Even though counterfeit products cause losses in sales for the automotive suppliers, drivers are massively at risk because of unsafe products.
The industry initiative „Manufacturers against Product Piracy“ (MAPP) was founded by members of the European umbrella organisation of automotive suppliers (CLEPA) to combat product piracy and exchange knowledge about product and brand protection. The goal of the initiative is to raise the market participants’ awareness for the topic and educate on how genuine parts can be identified.
As a measure to quicker distinguish between counterfeit and real products in future, multiple members of the initiative “Manufacturers against Product Piracy” (MAPP) are labelling their genuine products with a DataMatrix code based on a encoding recommendation by CLEPA or with a serialized QR code.
